“We have the Bridge of Doom, there’s a full moon and it’s Friday the 13th. What could possibly go wrong?” Spoken word by BYSC’s own Dane Turner the day before the 2nd Annual Pluff Mud Championship. This regatta is our stop on the SAYRA Jr Grand Prix; a series of regattas within our district that counts to an overall series champion each year. The more boats at a regatta, the more points it is worth. And what an amount of points we had to get! In only our 2nd year of this event, we had almost 70 entrants; the most entrants of any event in SAYRA this year!
Young athletes came to compete in the O’Pen Skiff, Laser and Optimist classes representing 10 SAYRA clubs from BYSC, SCYC, LLSC, JIYC, CYC-SC, CYC-NC, SIYC, HYC, ASC & CSC. Again, the most clubs recognized at a SAYRA event. Want to talk more numbers? We’re told that we were able to run the most races of any event so far: 10 on the Opti course and 12 on the O’Pen Skiff and Laser course.
With so much happening on the water, what else could we do? How about a pool party, barbecue and a competitors raffle? Huge thank you to Sayre Sailing and our West Marine Port Royal store for donating so much fun stuff for the competitors raffle! Pool floats, Roxy and Huk gear, sailing gloves and rash guards. Please go and support our wonderful partners for this event.
Putting together a regatta of this magnitude, which quickly became as large as our Lowcountry Regatta could only happen successfully with the volunteers from our club. We had almost 30 race committee volunteers over two courses and two days and 20 volunteers on-shore handling things like food, cleanup and competitor safety.
With the help of Kurt Oberle (the O’Pen Skiff class “Master of Doom”), we were able to be the first club in SAYRA to use the O’Pen Skiff Bridge of Doom. This extra mark of the course added to the fun and excitement on the water where the sailors had to limbo their boats UNDER the mark! Where else will you see that? Rumor has it we are going to hook up hoses and a bilge pump at the next regatta to add a waterfall element to it!!
Our own Arabella Duer finished 3rd Overall and 3rd in Opti Blue Fleet, Lachlan Duer finished 2nd in Opti White Fleet; Dane Turner finished 1st Overall and 1st in U13 in the O’Pen Skiff class, with Ben Gambla 4th, Bradley Fabian 5th, Matthew Bertagna 6th, Chase Richardson 9th, & Ryan Bertagna 11th in the O’Pen Skiff U13 class. Marshall Shook and Bopha Shook also came out to round out the BYSC/BCSB team on Saturday! Huge congratulations to our team!
We’re looking forward to running this event again in 2020 and very proud of all that BCSB and BYSC is doing to grow and support junior sailing in SAYRA!
See you on the water!
