BYSC was founded by a few intrepid sailors who braved the winds and currents of the Beaufort River in their sailboats, no matter the weather, to see who could win that weekend’s races and give them something to talk about all week long.
We’re still at it! The Spring Racing Series for dinghies is just around the corner, and BYSC’s famous race management team, the RIVER RATS, is gearing up for the season. We have openings for new volunteers, and we are asking each of our racing sailors to work one day on the Race Committee during the series (receiving their series average score for that day). We would love to have parents of junior sailors volunteer as well. So, if you are ready to become a River Rat, we have an event for you!
On Saturday, February 29th at 9:30am in the clubroom, we’ll have our Spring Race Management Seminar for all potential River Rats. You will learn about the various race committee jobs on the mark and signal boats. You will also learn about safety on the race course and assisting sailors with capsized boats.
We will take a lunch break at noon, so please bring a sandwich. Soft drinks and water will be provided.
After lunch we will go down to the dock and learn about anchoring our racing buoys in the river. We should be done by 2 p.m.
You might want a copy of Join the Race Committee Team, a very helpful US Sailing publication for only $5. And, before we go home, we will give you your very own yellow River Rats shirt! And of course your volunteer hours on the water count toward a credit against your dues (up to 24 hours).
Put this seminar on your calendar. Don’t miss your chance to become part of the heritage of your club – supporting the racing sailboats on the river! First race is Sunday, March 29th at 2 p.m.
