2018 marked the return of BYSC to the SAYRA Jr Grand Prix Championship circuit. This 8 regatta format of saltwater and freshwater stops chooses a season champion in multiple junior classes including Optimist, O’Pen Bic, 420, Laser and Sunfish. The format is simple, sail in a minimum of 3 out of 8 races where at least one is in fresh water and one is in salt water. Sail well and collect points. The sailor with the most points wins the season championship! BYSC’s own Bella Duer won the Optimist White fleet in 2017.
This year, we decided to put together a stand-alone event for juniors, separate from our larger regattas. The goal was to have a fun event, with the best race management and hold it close to fall when we can expect more consistent winds. That also meant that we put in the crosshairs of hurricane season. Due to Hurricane Florence, we had to move the event one week. While we lost some participants, especially our SAYRA family of sailors in NC, we were still able to have a competitive regatta.
On the water, our race management team put together a great series of 9 races over 2 days. The PRO’s of Wayne Bretsch and Frank Pontius and their team did a wonderful job. Bruce Harmer was on the water each day to get pictures of the competitors and were excellent as always! Off the water, the juniors were treated to great breakfasts, lunches from Firehouse Subs, a great cookout and a Competitors Raffle. West Marine, Harken, Lewmar and Doyle Sailmakers provided some excellent prizes. The grand prize of an Optimist top cover from Doyle going to Kate Zurinskas.
Congratulations to all of our competitors this year and all of our Inaugural Pluff Mud Champions! We hope to see you back next year to defend your title!
