October marks some season changes with our juniors. Kids are back in school, but that doesn’t mean sailing ends! Our high school team, coached by Peter Gamble, has been practicing for a month now and we have many new recruits that are training to fill some big shoes of those that graduated last year. The team of Clay Myers, Abbie Politzer, Ian Hoogenboom, Thomas Gnann and Brock Blonski will be competing in the first points regatta of the season in Charleston this weekend. They will also be traveling to New Orleans right before Thanksgiving for the Great Oaks Regatta, a very high profile national regatta!
Our summer Learn to Sail program had record numbers this year! That bit of great news means that we are also being pulled by the community to increase our offerings. Paul Keyserling has graciously stepped up to provide continuing training for a group of 8 Opti sailors on Friday evenings. Keep your eye out for the newest sailors around the club!
We are also continuing our Race Team in fleets of Opti’s and O’Pen Bics. You have probably seen them out on Sunday’s training for an hour before then participating in the BYSC Fall Series. We have about a dozen juniors signed up for this program.
Finally, a growing number of our juniors are travelling and this is the time of year when things really pick up! Bella and Lachlan Duer just got back from the US Optimist Southeast Championship at Lake Lanier Sailing Club where over 100 Opti’s participated. It was a super light air event, but the host club did a fantastic job of putting on an excellent regatta. From beach parties to family dinners, top notch race committees and great regatta swag. Even the parents had a great time camping on the club grounds! Bella finished well in Blue Fleet and Lachlan was 3rd in Green Fleet. Bella, Lachlan and a few others will be traveling a lot over the next few months to Columbia Sailing Club (Midlands Regatta), Charleston (O’Pen Bic Midwinters), New Orleans (US Optimist Midwinters) and Jensen Beach, FL (US Sailing Jr Olympics). All before Christmas this year! Watch our Facebook page and stay tuned for results as our growing team of juniors travels the South representing our club. We have much to be proud of!
